They ve been with us so long, we take them for granted, but plastic shopping bags were introduced as recently as 1977. It has been estimated that the world s annual consumption of plastic bags has reached almost a trillion, and 53 percent of those come from grocery stores. To combat the profusion of plastic, paper bags were re-introduced as an environmentally friendlier alternative. But are they?Though plastic bags are convenient and cheap, they do not biodegrade; they only photodegrade. That process, in which sunlight breaks down plastic into smaller and smaller pieces, can take up to a thousand years.Plastic bags use up natural resources, consume petroleum in order to be manufactured, create litter, choke marine life and add to landfill waste.Paper bags, though biodegradable, take more than four times as much energy to manufacture (which in turn produces greenhouse gases) than plastic bags.

As the volume of document issuance increases and new security threats occur, there is an increased need for industry-standard, next-generation contactless smart IC solutions that securely store, process and communicate data. These new smart ICs will have increased writing speeds to produce and process documents faster and more efficiently, as well as enhanced memory for future security requirements. When FRAM is manufactured at the 130 nanometer semiconductor process node, and embedded in a smart IC, it surpasses the limitations of current Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) and other memory technologies used in government ID applications. The imminent introduction of this innovative memory technology for smart ICs signals a shift in performance in smart card applications deployed in government electronic ID documents. This paper details the advantages of embedded FRAM memory for smart ICs in contrast to the traditional memory technologies used in many e-passport and government ID programs today. .
