They laughed gently at my ignorance before kindly explaining that the “treat” was a brown paper bag filled with goodies accompanied by a soda. They spent some long seconds trying to get me to understand that we didn’t have to pay for them and that some great things in life do come without charge. They got me to understand that treats were comparable to days when maths was not on the time table or even better…when the teacher was ill…. .
